Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental and neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is said to be a "developmental disorder" because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life.
Autism is known as a "spectrum" disorder due to the wide variation in the type and severity of symptoms people experience. It also affects all racial, ethnic, and economic groups. According to a 2016 statistic, 1.9% of children under the age of eight are diagnosed with it, meaning that approximately one in 45 children is diagnosed.
Individuals with autism, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), a guide prepared by the American Psychiatric Association used to diagnose mental disorders, may have:
- Difficulty communicating and interacting with others
- Specific interests and repetitive behaviors
- Other symptoms that impair the person’s ability to function properly in school, work, and other areas of life
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong condition, but treatments and psychological and therapeutic services can improve a person’s symptoms and ability to function. Here at Spectra Center, we are equipped with highly experienced doctors in developmental behavioral pediatrics and child psychology who can help your child and family through:
